Interview

In episode 9 of the Atila TV Podcast, we interview Josh Tufino, a self-started DJ and a Student at Niagara University for D1 Soccer. Josh, better known by his stage name DJ Tuffy, has opened for Tory Lanez, the Juno Award Winner for Rap Recording of the Year. Tuffy is also on a scholarship at Niagara University for his Soccer Career. In the podcast, we get to learn a lot about Josh’s journey as an artist, a soccer player, and as a hard-working citizen.

Some of the questions answered by Tuffy in the video include:

  1. Were you thinking of a Plan B if you didn’t make it? [2:22]

Josh worried a lot about whether he should have a backup plan. Because he was competing in the thousands and the odds of becoming a professional soccer player was so low he knew he wanted a backup. As well, if the worst were to happen and he would get injured and couldn’t play anymore he wanted something to rely on. That’s when he decided as a backup he wanted to do investment banking. A lot of his family was in investment banking and lived really happy lives. Although it wasn’t his first choice, investment banking was a stable career for him to fall back on.

  1. Why did you go to university if you knew you wanted to play professional soccer? [3:27]

Josh’s parents and coaches always emphasized that if he were to get injured, or his paperwork didn’t go through in Europe, or if there were any other complications, he would need something to fall back on. So he decided why no have the best of both worlds? Why not be able to do Division 1 Soccer while also getting a degree. This way, by the end of university he can decide if he wants to get a career or wants to continue with soccer. Also as he mentioned before, he would be able to have a viable Plan B.

  1. What was your process for looking at different schools? [4:27]

It was hard because to get known to the US coaches you have to go out to them. When he was in grade 11, his parents couldn’t afford to send him to the states for his North Carolina tournament that could heavily impact his future for soccer. As a result of his determination, he sold his PS4 to go to the tournament. He worked his whole summer at a factory with his dad to buy that PS4 but then he had to sell it for his dream. The whole process was, in fact, difficult and the beginning was a little discouraging but he knows that the results were worth it every time.

  1. Because of all the things you missed out on did you ever experience FOMO? [10:10]

His team had a tradition where they only went out for drinks when they won a game. Unfortunately, in her first year, they were having a “dry” season with virtually no wins whatsoever. So for an entire year, he barely went out with his friends. But although you might experience some FOMO it was rewarding to know how much time he was putting in to achieve his dreams. Later on in the university, when he began to DJ, he was a lot more familiar with the party scene and as he states “it’s in my blood to have a good time” because of his South American descent.

  1. How did you go from DJ-ing on a small HP laptop to opening for Tory Lanez, a world recording artist? [13:01]

It was actually straight through the school. His school was hosting a Tory Lanez Event, and he figured it was a great opportunity to get out there. He was hoping he could get the opportunity to open for Tory but he needed help from other people. He was already somewhat well known in the Niagara Region and after a few recommendations and he was able to get an opportunity to open for Tory Lanez. He now is acquainted with Tory Lanez’s DJ and is planning to contact him in the future later on in his career.
